The Northwoods Country Hat Crochet craft

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn:

  • 5 oz MC, small amount CC
Adults:
• 6 oz MC, 2 oz CC

Sizes H/8 and J/10 crochet hooks or sizes needed to obtain gauge

Yarn needle

5-inch square cardboard

Gauge

Working brim with larger hook, 7 sc = 2 inches; 3 sc rows = 1 inch
Working brim with smaller hook, 9 sc = 2 inches; 4 sc rows = 1 inch
Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Use larger hook for adult size cap and smaller hook for child size cap.

Brim

Row 1: With MC for child’s and CC for adults, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (12 sc)
Row 2: Working in back lps only, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 3–75: Rep Row 2. At the end of Row 75, turn.

Cap

Row 1: Ch 1, working across side edge of brim rows, work 1 sc in each row, for child’s cap turn, for adults fasten off CC, attach MC, turn. (75 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
Rows 3 & 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc across, dec 3 sc evenly sp across, turn. (72 sc)
Rows 6 & 7: Rep Row 2.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc across, dec 6 sc evenly sp across, turn. (66 sc)
Rows 9–13: Rep Row 2.
Row 14: Rep Row 8. (60 sc)
Rows 15–17: Rep Row 2.
Row 18: Rep Row 8. (54 sc)
Rows 19–22: Rep Row 2.

With matching yarn, sew brim and cap seam. Fold brim upward onto cap. 

Tassel

Cut 2 lengths of CC yarn and set aside. Wrap CC around cardboard until desired thickness. Pass a length under bundle of wrapped yarn at center top, tie ends securely tog and knot. Cut opposite end of tassel strands and remove cardboard. Wrap 2nd length of yarn around tassel approximately 1 1/2 inch from top of tassel. Trim ends as desired. Attach tassel to Row 67 of cap.
