Within precious or semiprecious stones and crystals resides a wealth of knowledge. They have been around for much longer that I have been alive - at least in this incarnation - and I would be foolish not to avail myself of their wisdom. Each stone has its own energy, attributes, and uses. But in the following divinatory practices I have chosen to focus on color as an easy way to connect with the stone's energies. We use color during ritual in order to resonate with those energies we are tapping into, thus using colored stones in divination is one way of receiving hints about the future.

Divination comes from the root word 'divine', which has to do with the Deity. When we utilize forms of divination we are attempting to connect with the Divine Mind in order to receive clarity or guidance about a matter. There are, of course, other ways to do this. One may consult a book, talk with a friend or trained counselor, or in other ways work out the answer to a problem. But if you think that using divination may be of some assistance, the following divinatory casts may be of use. Remember though that the future is not "cast in stone," and that you may always exercise your free will in any matter.

Following is a list of stones and their symbolism. If the colors and their attributes do not fit for you, please feel free to alter them to your needs. Likewise, if I have not mentioned a stone you feel particularly comfortable working with, add it to the list under the appropriate color selection.

There are many divinatory systems available from which to choose, and they will all work, as they tap into the unconscious mind where all answers reside. This system will do the same, whether you use it "As is" or change it to conform more closely to your needs.

For the following divinatory casts you will use just thirteen stones. From the list below, choose one stone from each color selection until you have all thriteen. These will be your working stones. Beneath each heading is the symbolism for that color, which will be used in divining the answers to your questions.

As you utilize the following casts allow your intuitive self full rein. Each stone has several meanings, which are represented by a word (for example: red = passion or anger or change). Divine the meaning that is pertinent to your question, then allow the word to sink softly into your unconscious mind. Your intuitive self will take that word and expand upon it, giving you the answer you seek. Simply pay attention and you will have fruitful results.

THIRTEEN STONE CAST

For this cast place all of the stones in a pouch used for the purpose. Hold the pouch while thinking of your question. An example might be, "What do I need to do in order to get the job I want?" Reach into the pouch without looking and draw forth a stone. Place it in front of you. If the answer makes sense to you, stop there; if not, reach in and draw forth another stone. If you are still not sure of the answer, draw a third stone. This will bind the first two. The answers combined will be the answer you seek.

YES/NO CAST

This is used when all you need is a "yes" or "no" answer. While thinking of your question, reach into the pouch and stir the stones around. When you feel the time is right, LIGHTLY clasp a collection of stones and draw them forth from the pouch. If the number of stones are even, the answer is "yes"; if odd, the answer is "no".

A variation of this is to take a piece of felt and draw a circle on it. Divide the circle in half. On one side write "yes", on the other, write "no". Mark an "x" in the very center of the circle. Hold the pouch while thinking of your question, and when you feel the time is right, tip the bag over the felt circle, making sure to do so over the center point. Then count the number of stones on each side, discarding those sitting on the dividing line or falling outside of the circle. The side with the most stones will be your answer.

SACRED CIRCLE CAST

This is used when you need to know how your past and present will affect a future outcome. Hold the pouch of stones as you ask your question. Next, remove all of the stones from your pouch, one at a time, and place then in a circle (you may use the cirle drawn on your felt piece as a guide). Locate the "top" of the circle (the 12:00 position on a clock face). Keeping your question in mind and moving clockwise, pull each fourth stone out of the cirle and place it before you, from left to right. Do this until you have three stones in front of you. The leftmost stone is your recent past with regards to the question; the middle stone is the present; and the rightmost stone is the possible future. Read them all together to find your answer.

ELEMENTAL CIRCLE CAST

This is used when you need balance and want to incorporate the wisdom of the elementals into your answer. Place all of the stones in your pouch. As you hold the pouch, think about your question. When ready, reach in and remove one stone. Place this in front of you in the 3:00 position (you may use the circle drawn on your felt piece for a guide). This is the stone for the element of the east, which is air and is concerned with your thoughts and intuition about the matter. Reach in the pouch and remove another stone. This will be placed in the 6:00 position and is the stone for the element of the south, which is fire. This stone is concerned with your will and actions.Now remove a third stone and place it in the 9:00 position. This is the stone for the element of the west, which is water, and is concerned with your emotions and feelings about the matter. Draw out a fourth stone and place it at the 12:00 position. This is the stone for the element of north, which is earth, and is concerned with manifesting results. Finally, draw out a fifth stone and place it in the center. This is the stone for spirit, which is everywhere. It is concerned with transformation and change, and of the Divine Mind.

Now starting with air and moving around the circle, discern what each stone is telling you about each aspect of the question. The spirit stone may be a clarification of the answer by tying all of the other answers together.

CHAKRA MEDITATION

This is a meditation rather than a divinatory exercise, yet is may also be used to locate areas of physical concern or stress.

Choose seven stones with colors to represent each of the seven chakras. They should be laid out as folloows.

7 = Crown shakra: amethyst or violet (white) *

6 = Third Eye or Brow chakra: dark blue or indigo (amethyst) *

5 = Throat chakra: light blue

4 = Heart chakra: green

3 = Solar Plexus chakra: yellow

2 = Naval chakra: orange

1 = Root chakra: red

Once your stones are laid out, pick up the first stone, for the Root chakra, and hold it in your dominant hand. Close your eyes, meditate on the color red, and visualize your Root chakra opening like a lotus flower. When it feels as if it is fully open, move on to the next stone and the next chakra. If there are any blockages along the way you might feel it in your body at that chakra point, or in the stone you are holding. Pay special attention to that area. Once all of the chakras are open, simply sit in quiet meditation, drawing health and balance to yourself. When you feel the time is right, close each chakra, beginning at the Crown and moving down to the Root, visualizing each energy point closing up like the petals of a flower. This is a good meditation to use for balance and inner healing.

Scanning the Future

One of the great advantages of regular meditation is that it
enhances your sense of intuition. The more you practice
meditation, the more you gain insight into every aspect of your
life. Insights can relate to present or past events, leading to
a greater understanding of your life's path, or they can relate
to future events.

Insights into future events can be challenging in four ways:

1. The future is not fixed. Until you experience it, the
future remains as an array of possibilities with a "most
likely" scenario based on what holds the greatest energy.

2. Viewing the future can change the outcome. Even a 100%
accurate view of the most likely scenario will trigger
questions about whether you want that scenario to manifest, and
that change can influence the outcome. This can give the
illusion of inaccuracy in the original prediction.

3. Inner impressions come into your awareness through your
imagination. However, a fertile imagination can create images
on its own, almost for pure entertainment. True impressions of
a future event arrive while you are in a meditative state, or
sometimes while performing a monotonous task such as driving at
a constant speed. They don't fire up with the great energy of a
dramatic imagination. They slip in quietly and have to be
examined and unraveled to see what each impression contains.

4. When you first start scanning the future, your predictions
will be less accurate than they will become later, after
constant practice.

Sometimes, lack of self-esteem can be a barrier to the
development of your innate abilities. In that case you need to
be aware that everyone is everything that Infinite Being is.
The universe is holographic by design, meaning that while the
many make up the One, the One is also mirrored within each of
the many. So, each person, each spark of Infinite Being,
contains all of the qualities of Infinite Being.

Lack of self-esteem, therefore, is only a personality trait
and not reflective of your true self.

You have a perfect sense of intuition or insight, just waiting
to be developed. One of the hallmarks of the global Shift to
higher consciousness is that, with each passing year, more and
more people will develop more and more of their inner
abilities.

While you are practicing your intuitive skills, it is a good
idea to make written notes for later reference. Insights arrive
in your consciousness while you are in an altered, meditative
state, so their memory dissipates quickly just like the memory
of your dreams. If you keep notes, then re-read them weeks or
months later, you will be amazed at how accurate many of these
insights were.

Sometimes, you will also see how insights into less than
desirable scenarios caused you to make a decision to steer your
life in a different direction. When faced with decisions about
which direction to turn, the best barometer is always your
highest joy. Ask yourself:

"What scenario would represent my highest joy?"

Divining by pancake batter

Some Sunday morning when the family is gathered round, have each member try this:
Scoop some pancake batter in a ladle and, with your eyes closed, drizzle it onto the pan. 
Then see what shape it forms (rather like seeing pictures in clouds or tea leaves). 
Children are especially good at this.  
Of course, afterward, everybody must eat his or her fortune!

Midsummer Eve Pillow Divinations

On Midsummer Eve, various herbs and charms placed beneath your pillow
are capable of bringing prophetic dreams:

To dream of an absent lover, daisy roots should be placed under the
pillow.

Place a piece of mugwort gathered on Midsummer Eve beneath your pillow
for prophetic dreams.

Wrap a piece of wax in a stocking and place it under the pillow. The
next morning melt the wax and pour it into a vial of water to set in the
sun. It will harden into a shape that shows the occupation of your
future husband.

Oak flowers on Midsummer Eve and withers before daybreak it is said.
Spread a sheet beneath the tree and catch the blossoms. Place them under
your pillow and dream of your future lover.

According to old English lore, yarrow gathered from a young man's
grave and laid under the pillow on Midsummer Eve will produce a vision
of your husband-to-be.

Placing ash leaves beneath the pillow results in prophetic dreams.

A laurel leaf placed beneath the pillow brings out prophetic dreams.

Betony placed beneath the pillow prevents nightmares, the elf sickness
inflicted by malicious fairies, and even drunkenness.

If you find a cinquefoil that has seven points (they usually have five),
it should be placed under the pillow so that you can dream of your
future partner.

Place a four-leaf clover under your pillow to dream of your perfect
partner.

According to a northern English custom, a future spouse can be
determined by putting three holly leaves, named for three suitors and
blessed in the name of the Trinity, under your pillow with the left
hand. The first leaf to have turned over in the morning should be the
one.

Marigold petals placed under the pillow will give you prophetic dreams
and enable you to identify a thief or robber.

Mistletoe place beneath the pillow is an aid to conception and also
ensures a restful sleep and good dreams.

Placed under the pillow, rosemary ensures pleasant dreams and keeps evil
away.

Sleeping with sage leaves under the pillow encourages prophetic dreams.

Cauldron Prophecy Magic Spell
Purpose: For prophecies to be revealed through dreams, strong impressions or immediate visions.

Fill a cauldron or large, black iron pot half-full of fresh water. Add a handful of Buttercup or Marigold petals. Light incense of Sage (also used for protection) or burn some Thyme. Stir the cauldron/pot gently three times while chanting the magic spell :

A Candle to the Fae

To be done on Full Moon, light a light blue or silver candle and say:

"A candle for the folk of Faerie, An honor on this full moon night.
Come and play a dance merry, and bring with thee the sight.
What I ask will thee show? Without rhyme or spell?
When I peak into the flame Will thee the future tell?"

Ask a question if you wish and then look at the candle flame and notice its shape, any shadows it casts on the walls or any images or feelings. This will be your response from the fae.

When you drive off to work in the morning, do a "cat count" on the way out of your neighborhood. Look for cats resting peacefully on porches or fences, under bushes or parked cars. The more cats you find enjoying the light of the new morning, the more likely you will find good fortune in

Catoptromancy

Catoptromancy, also Enoptromancy, Catoxtromancy and Caloptromancy. A form of divination technique utilizing a mirror, which was turned to the moon to catch the lunar rays. The sought after answers usually appeared in characters of blood on the face of the moon, or rather, in its reflection on the mirror. This is a very ancient form of crystal gazing, and was practiced extensively by the Greeks and Romans.

Another method, used for 'medical' prognostications, involved hanging the mirror by a thread over a fountain or pool of water. After the mirror was slowly lowered until its base barely touched the surface of the water, some incense was burnt and prayers were recited. The presage of death or recovery was arrived according as the to the face that appeared in the mirror. If it was a fresh and healthy image, recovery was imminent; but if instead a ghastly aspect was represented, death was sure to come swiftly.

Catoptromancy is a type of divination with a mirror which the second century AD Greek traveler Pausanius described as follows: "Before the Temple of Ceres at Patras, there was a fountain, separated from the temple by a wall, and there was an oracle, very truthful, not for all events, but for the sick only. The sick person let down a mirror, suspended by a thread till its based touched the surface of the water, having first prayed to the goddess and offered incense. Then looking in the mirror, he saw the presage of death or recovery, according as the face appeared fresh and healthy, or of a ghastly aspect."

Another divinatory method of using a mirror was to place it at the back of a boy's or girl's head when their eyes were bandaged shut. In Thessaly the responses appeared in characters of blood on the face of the moon, probably projected in the mirror. This practiced was derived by the Thessalian sorceresses from the Persians who wanted to establish their religion and mystical rituals in the countries which they invaded.

Throughout history people have sort ways of finding spiritual or
mystical guidance in their every day lives. Consulting the Oracle,
Soothsayer or village wise person who had the gift of seeing into
the future was common practice in ancient times. However, you don't
have to be a psychic to predict the future. In the simple system of
Cyclomancy, a revolving device, such as a wheel or revolving circle
can be very effective tool for divination (ability to foretell the
future by intuitive rather than scientific or rational means). The
practice of Cyclomamcy may have been the origin of the roulette
wheel as a game of chance. The "wheel-of-fortune" found at fair
grounds which stops on prize-winning numbers or the TV "Wheel of
Fortune" are also based on this concept. Cyclomancy has survived as
the popular party kissing game "spin the bottle", or in a
combination of 'Truth or Dare'. In this variation, the spinner gets
to ask the person whom the bottle points to an intimate, personal
question, which must be answered truthfully. In all these methods,
the decision of the wheel is automatically fulfilled, so it is not
surprising that many people believe that questions concerning their
future can be answered by a similar contrivance.

CYCLOMANCY dates from time immemorial, and takes its name from the
Latin word 'Cyclomantia' and from ancient Greek 'Kyklos' meaning a
circle. Spinning arrows may be used instead of revolving wheels for
telling fortunes. In occult practices the wheel will have
astrological signs, numbers, letters, words or mystical symbolic
makings around it. The powerful archetypal symbol of the 'Wheel of
fortune' in the tarot deck reminds us of how random and
unpredictable life can be. And that we are all subject to the
workings of fate and Karma, in that what ever he/she sows he/she
shall reap.

One form of divinational consultation is in finding geographical
direction. When at a crossroad, take a bottle and lay it
horizontally on the ground, and spin it. When it stops spinning, the
neck of the bottle will point to the road where your destiny lies.
Alternatively, before spinning the bottle ask a question with
regards to the different directions, for example in which direction
will I have the most fun, view the best sights or meet a new
friends. Variations of the method use knifes or spinning tops.

In order to get started, first you're going to have to check your
logic mind behind. It's a bit like visiting the cinema and as you
walk in the door agreeing with yourself that for the next 90 minutes
or so you will suspend your sense of reality. Trusting your
intuition is a lot like that, once you begin to 'trust' that your
question will be answered, somehow the cosmic wheels begin to turn
and you will receive the answer to your question.

This handy do-it-yourself divination tool can be used when seeking
advice or answers to questions regarding past, present or future
events. To make your own Cyclomancy fortune telling wheel, first cut
a piece of card to the size of a dinner plate. Using a pen, divide
the wheel into ten equal sections so that it looks similar to the
spokes of a cycle wheel. Next pierce a hole in the centre with a
skewer. Take three deep breaths and relax, as you do this gently
begin to focus on the question that you would like to ask. When you
feel ready spin the wheel and see where it stops. In a similar way
an arrow could be secured to the centre by a pivot so that it freely
revolves when given a sharp spin, the number that the arrow stops on
being the significant one.

The analysis of the number is based on the ancient system of
Numerology also known as Arithmomancy. The system was popular
amongst early mathematicians such as Pythagoras who believed that
each of the numbers one to nine had it's own psychic or spiritual
significance.

The interpretation of the numbers is as follows :

One - New beginnings, ideas and inspiration. Exciting new changes
ahead in love, business, education. Two - A need for tact and
diplomacy. Two's denote balance and harmony and fair play. Hidden
things that need to be revealed. A period of waiting. Three - Birth,
pregnancy and marriage. A reason to celebrate or to go out and have
fun. Your ships are coming in. Successful teamwork. Four - Security,
home, property, DIY around the house, time to take a break go on
holiday. Five - Problems to overcome, a time to be assertive, excess
energy at your disposal. Watch out for jealousy and conflict amongst
friends.. Six - Time to give and receive in many ways, money, time,
support. A time of success, meeting old friends, compassion, travel.
A time for making choices. Seven - Staying in control via
understanding, time for clear thinking, beware of deception, need to
check security, time for evaluating a situation. Eight -
Determination to achieve goals, on-the-job study, dissatisfaction
with an aspect of your life, feeling trapped, time to move on, end
of delays. Nine - Light at the end of the tunnel, preparation for a
new beginning, smugness, and success, unnecessary worries. Ten -
Change, the end of a journey, success, family gatherings, support of
others, idealism, a sense of community.

wax divination

To perform divination with candles, you will need a small bowl filled with
cool water, a variety of colored candles, matches or a lighter, and an open
mind. Put a white candle by each side of the bowl on an altar or table where
it can easily be reached by each person present.

Have each person present select a colored candle. Have the participants
choose the question they want answered by the divination beforehand, so the
question can be matched with the appropriate candle color.

Red is used for love and relationships.

Green is used for love prosperity, career, or jobs.

Yellow is used for school, study, creativity, and mental pursuits.

Light blue is used for health and recovery from illness.

Violet is used for spiritual growth.

Pink for friendships, children and pets.

Orange for changes and possible moves.

White is used for general life patterns.


Before the participants light their candles for divination, have each of
them call upon an ancestor whom they liked for aid.

To begin, have one person at a time light a candle of his or her choice.
Gently stir the water in the bowl in a clockwise direction, then have the
person with the candle let the wax slowly drip into the water while thinking
of the question to be answered. Patterns in the wax are scanned for symbols
that will answer the question. If any of the wax symbols break apart or are
indistinct, the meaning is modified. A list of possible symbols are
interpretations follows. After each reading, take out the used wax.

Airplane or boat, whole: travel; movement.

Airplane or boat, broken: danger of an accident.

Birds: good news, message from afar.

Butterfly: fickle friends; unreliable person.

Cats: good friends, contentment.

Chain: person or circumstances halts movement.

Circle: success, completion of a cycle.

Dagger: danger, trechery, recklessness.

Dish, unbroken: contentment and plenty.

Dish, broken: problems at home.

Dogs: false friends.

Egg: positive influences, possibly a child.

Forked line: a decision to be made.

Gate: future success.

Hand, open: new friendships.

Hand, closed: opportunity lost, arguments.

Heart: love, happy relationship.

House: security, a home of your own.

Knife: broken friendship or relationship.

Ladder: promotion, opportunity to move higher.

Scott Cunningham's recipes have been used many times. You may find his version in Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic p. 89.

Items Needed
Azurite Stone
2 Purple Candles
Cinnamon—either an essential oil or as an incense

Perform this spell either at the Full or Dark Moon.

Before performing this ritual light the incense. If you have chosen to use
the essential oil, either prepare and start burning your aroma lamp, or
place one drop of the oil on each wrist.

Ground and center yourself. Light the candles. Place the azurite between
the candles. Look at the flames and the stones for a moment and empty your
mind of all thoughts. Take the azurite into your hand until it is warm.
Close your eyes and concentrate on a question you have. Open your eyes and
gaze at the stone until you have received a message.

Notes on the items used in the spell:
Azurite stones has psychic powers and can be used in all divinatory rituals.
The color purple enhances psychic skills and can also be used in all
divinatory rituals. Cinnamon is a scent that promotes psychic work.

About the Moon Phase: During the Full Moon our psychic powers are at its
highest. The Dark Moon is a time of mystery and hidden secrets, another
good time to perform divination work.

Other Notes: If you like, add a purple altar cloth to cover your working
area. If you use candle holders, silver is an excellent metal for psychic
work.

CANDLES

Divining candle flames
This comes from Tammy Sullivan's book "Elemental Witches.

Anytime you light a candle for a magical purpose, you can divine the wax,
flame, and smoke patterns to interpret your answers. One simple but
effective method is to assign the candle right and left sides that
correspond to yes and no. If the candle drips first to the left and you
assigned that side to no, then the answer is no.

Other methods call for watching the flame dance or the smoke spiral in a
given direction. If it dances to the west you must watch your emotions.
If it dances to the east, you must use your mental processes. Likewise,
if it dances to the north, you will face a physical task, and if it
dances to the south, you will have an intense experience of success.

If the flame burns high and strongly, the magic is working, quickly and
will be successful. If it is burns low and almost smotherng itself out,
you need to cleanse the entire area, including yourself, and rework the
spell. If the flame is crackling, it means you are connected to the
divine. If it is sparking, it means to expect company.

If the soot around the candle turns the glass very black (like in a
novena), it is thought to mean that someone has been thinking ill of you.
A cleansing of the area should be performed. If the black soot is only
arough the top edge of the novena, it means that the magic encountered
opposition and may take a while to take effect.

If the smoke spirals toward you, the spell will work quickly. If it
drifts away from you, you will have to persevere in order for your wish
to be granted.

Some schools of thought teach to never blow out a candle flame, because
it is rude to the elemental spirits of the fire. Others teach never to
pinch them out. Likewise, some teach to never use matches and other say
to use only matches. These are things you should decide for yourself.
Also, when employing candles for magic, always allow them to burn
themselves out, if possible.

To perform divination with candles, you will need a small bowl filled with cool water, a variety of colored candles, matches or a lighter, and an open mind. Put a white candle by each side of the bowl on an altar or table where it can easily be reached by each person present.

Have each person present select a colored candle. Have the participants choose the question they want answered by the divination beforehand, so the question can be matched with the appropriate candle color.

Red is used for love and relationships.

Green is used for love prosperity, career, or jobs.

Yellow is used for school, study, creativity, and mental pursuits.

Light blue is used for health and recovery from illness.

Violet is used for spiritual growth.

Pink for friendships, children and pets.

Orange for changes and possible moves.

White is used for general life patterns.


Before the participants light their candles for divination, have each of them call upon an ancestor whom they liked for aid.

To begin, have one person at a time light a candle of his or her choice. Gently stir the water in the bowl in a clockwise direction, then have the person with the candle let the wax slowly drip into the water while thinking of the question to be answered. Patterns in the wax are scanned for symbols that will answer the question. If any of the wax symbols break apart or are indistinct, the meaning is modified. A list of possible symbols are interpretations follows. After each reading, take out the used wax.

Butterfly: fickle friends; unreliable person.

DIVINING WITH PLAYING CARDS

Card reading or cartomancy as it is known, has been a popular pastime for
centuries. Most people associate this practice with Tarot cards, yet ordinary
playing cards can be used just as easily. All forms of card reading are based on
symbolism, the cards are used to represent archetypes, actual people, events or
various aspects of life. A full deck of playing cards consists of 52 cards, and
there are the same number of weeks in a year. The pack is divided into four
suits, just as there are four seasons, four quarters and four elements. The
suits are of two colors, red or black, reflecting the essential duality of life
itself, male and female, light and dark, positive and negative etc.

Their meanings ; Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades. Or go straight to the
Spreads.

The Club Suite

Clubs represent people with rich brown or red hair, a high color and brown or
hazel eyes. An active, energetic personality. Enterprise and fresh activity.

Ace - An unexpected gift, financial windfall or good news concerning money.

Two - Long term plans could meet with opposition or delay as a result of
another's interference. Beware of idle chat or malicious gossip.

Three - Successful marriage, remarriage or a declaration of intent is possible
for those who have experienced a long term relationship.

Four - Fortunes could take a turn for the worse due to another's deceit or
treachery, so do not take everything on trust. Keep plans flexible.

Five - A time of change for the better, with the accent on partnership.
Business ventures will be financially rewarding, the prospects are equally rosy
for marriage plans.

Six - A good omen for those seeking commercial success, established businesses

colleague.

The Diamond Suite

Diamonds represent very pale people with fair or white hair and light blue or
grey eyes. Assured, sophisticated types. Money and material possessions,
business, status and security.

Ace - A long awaited letter or important document will arrive shortly, bringing
welcome news. A financial offer or marriage proposal could be made.

Two - A love affair or close friendship should be developing steadily even if
attracting the disapproval of others. Business matters should be showing
progress.

Three - Partnerships com under scrutiny and tact may be required if disputes are
to be avoided. Litigation is possible, though the outcome could be beneficial.
The outlook is promising if cooperation can be maintained.

Four - Do not allow harsh words or rash actions to mar a relationship. Despite
petty squabbles, matters can be resolved with patience and understanding,
perhaps an old friend could help reconcile differences.

Five - News of a birth in the family or a child's achievement will bring much

disastrous. Alternatively, a warning to guard against dishonesty.

Queen - This card represents a woman who may pose a threat to a female
questioner's love life or who could interfere in a male enquirer's business
affairs. In either case, this lady needs careful handling, so tact is advised.

King - An ambitious and influential man who has it in his power to help or
hinder the enquirer's interests. Any proposition should therefore be considered
very thoroughly.

The Heart Suite

Hearts represent light brown or auburn haired people with pinkish complexions
and blue, grey or hazel eyes. A friendly, sympathetic nature. Emotional
matters, love and marriage, children and artistic pursuits.

Ace - A card promising affection and domestic happiness. It could refer to a
birth, marriage proposal, new friendship or reunion.

Two - Good fortune, perhaps greater than anticipated. The consolidation of a
current partnership or new romantic liaison. All friendships and close personal
ties should flourish.

Three - An engagement or news of a wedding. A difficult choice may have to be
made, if so, try to defer a decision until you can consider all the
possibilities.

Four - A time of change, either of employment or residence, or perhaps both.
Marriage or remarriage is a possibility for a mature enquirer.

Five - Not a time to make important decisions or to contemplate dramatic changes
in your way of life. The best advice is to take a short break, relax and get
your thoughts in order before tackling any business or domestic worries.

Six - Pleasing family news, perhaps of an engagement or a child's achievement.
However, others may try to take advantage of your good nature, so avoid taking
on too much.

Seven - Keep plans flexible, a friend or colleague could let you down at the
last moment or an anticipated event be cancelled without warning. Romance is
well starred.

Eight - Social life is highlighted and will bring much pleasure. A journey or
outing could lead to a romantic encounter which develops into an enduring
relationship.

Nine - Often known as the wish card, this good omen promises success in whatever
is closest to the enquirer's heart at the time of the reading. Any existing
misunderstandings will soon be resolved.

Ten - A fortunate card promising happiness in love, a fulfilling domestic
situation and business success. An opportunity to secure the future may arise
unexpectedly, if so, do not hesitate to take it up.

Jack - An amiable, sincere young person, probably a friend of long standing or
near relative of the enquirer. He or she could be instrumental in introducing
the enquirer to someone who is to become very important emotionally.

Queen - A warm hearted, mature woman who has the enquirer's best interests at
heart. Kind, affectionate and sensible, she offers sound advice, practical help
and comfort.

King - A good natured man, well disposed towards the enquirer. Sociable,
generous and enthusiastic, he may lack discretion, so is not always a wise
judge. Alternatively, an indication that any minor money problems will be short
lived.

The Spade Suite

Spades represent sallow complexioned people with dark brown or black hair and
eyes. Powerful or influential people, strong characters. Power or position,
conflict, mental activities, law and order, foreign affairs.

Ace - A card of challenge, signifying the end oof one cycle and the start of the
next. Underlying tensions or problems, whether at home or work, are about to
erupt, this may be distressing but will clear the way ahead.

Two - Change is imminent, this may mean a new hhome or job, or possibly the end
of a relationship. Whatever the case, despite a feeling of loss, the new
situation leads to improved circumstances long term.

Three - Caution and prudence are advised, especiaally in any form of
partnership. In business or emotional life, conflict can arise if you allow a
third party to interfere or let outside interests intrude.

Four - Disappointment is the key work. Plaans may be delayed or disrupted,
promises could be broken and, on the home front, much needed support may be
lacking. Do not worry, there will be fresh opportunities.

Five - Do not despair if things fail to go accorrding to plan, financial or
business problems are only temporary and can be resolved in time. All will be
well if you have patience, reschedule your program and persevere.

Six - Progress may seem irritatingly slow, espeecially if you are hoping to
complete a deal. Despite setbacks, plans will come to fruition eventually, with
hard work and persistence, so do not give up.

Seven - You may have to cope with an unexpected bburden or onerous task. Try to
keep a sense of proportion, foolish anxiety over minor issues could cause
tension and lead to unnecessary conflicts.

Eight - Difficulties all round, a testing time whhen close relationships could
be under sever strain, business and travel plans go awry or a friend lets you
down. Resist harsh words or hasty actions and guard health.

Nine - Physical and mental energy may be at a loow ebb due to anxiety, so do not
take on extra burdens until this trying period is over. Offset depression by
taking stock of assets and make realistic plans and goals for the future.

Ten - Unwelcome news or worry over a loved one adds to an already tricky
situation. It may be difficult to summon up enthusiasm, yet this phase will
soon be over and the prospect for the future looks considerably rosier.

Jack - An acquaintance or relative of the enquirrer who, despite good
intentions, may well cause problems. Friendly and witty, this young person may
be good company but is also immature, irresponsible and unreliable.

Queen - An independent, capable and efficient womman, possibly a widow or
divorcee, who can be ruthlessly ambitious. She makes a strong ally but a
formidable foe, and may be too forthright to have many close friends.

King - A successful man of some standing, perhapps a lawyer or other
professional, who is in a position to help the enquirer. Influential and
authoritative, he will demand respect and his advice is to be trusted.



THE SPREADS

There are a few spreads you can use for reading playing cards. Magic Square,
The Romany Spread, The Celestial Circle, The Bohemian Spread and The Mystic
Cross.

Some spreads require a significator ; a card to represent either the person for
who the reading is being done or the matter under consideration. So the first
thing to decide is which suit accords best with the characteristics of the
enquirer or the nature of the particular enquiry. Once you have decided on the
appropriate suit, choose the relevant court card for the age and sex of the
enquirer , a King for a mature man, a Queen for a mature woman, a Jack for a
young person of either sex. Or, if selecting an impersonal card, use the Ace of
the designated suit.

THE CELESTIAL CIRCLE

Also known as the Wheel of the Year. 13 cards are selected, the first 12 are
laid out in order like a clock face, beginning at the 1 o'clock position and
moving clockwise. The 13th is place in the centre of the circle. This card is
interpreted first because it signifies the overall flavour of the coming 12
months. The other 12 cards, each representing on calendar month, are then read
in clockwise sequence. The first card dealt, in the 1 o'clock position, relates
to the month in which the reading is taking place, and is indicative of the
overriding influence in the enquirer's life at that time. Card 2 represents the
following month, and Card 3 the following etc.

THE BOHEMIAN SPREAD

The bohemian spread is a very simple layout, consisting of 7 cards, and is ideal
for answering a specific query but is less suitable for a general reading.
After shuffling and cutting in the usual way, the first 7 cards are laid out in
an open pyramid or inverted "V", from left to right. They are then interpreted
according to the positions in which they fall, as follows:

1. The enquirer's home environment and domestic issues, household goods,
renovations and removals.

2. Current influences, factors that related directly to present circumstances,
such as hopes or worries.

3. Relationships of all kinds, love, friendship, business or romantic
partnerships, rivals or enemies.

4. The enquirer's wishes in the matter under consideration, what he or she hopes
or wants to achieve.

5. Unexpected assistance or obstacles that are likely to help or hinder the aim
signified by the preceding card.

6. Those events that are likely to affect the enquirer's immediate future, both
the possibilities and probabilities.

7. Any helpful influences or fortunate circumstances that the enquirer can use
to advantage, lucky opportunities.

MYSTIC CROSS

A significator is required for this spread, and this card should be taken from
the pack and looked at before the remaining cards are shuffled and cut. 12
cards should then be selected and laid face down in a pile on the table. Once
this is done, the enquirer is asked to place the significator anywhere he or she
likes among the other 12 cards chosen, and the interpreter then lays out all 13
in 2 rows, one vertical and one horizontal, to form an equal armed cross. The
vertical row is read from top to bottom and refers to the enquirer's present
situation, the horizontal row is read from left to right, relates to influences
affecting current events. If the significator falls in the vertical row, it
indicates that the enquirer is in the grip of circumstances beyond his or her
control, but if it falls in the horizontal row, he or she has the matter in
hand. The fourth card laid, at the centre of the cross, represents the factor
around which the entire situation revolves. This card will, therefore, provide
the key to the matter.

THE MAGIC SQUARE

For this spread, the questioner should start by selecting a significator from
the pack. Place this card on the table, then shuffle and cut cards. Deal 8
cards around the centre card in order clockwise, then deal a 9th card over the
significator card which is centre. The cards are interpreted according to their
position as follows.

1. The Individual - the state of mind of the questioner.

2. External influences and unexpected factors.

3. Surroundings - friends, family, colleagues and home.

4. Hopes and fears.

5. Alternatives - possible opportunities and challenges.

6. Aspirations and beliefs.

7. Negative factors - those which limit or oppose the questioner.

8. Positive factors - constructive or helpful influences.

9. Potential - initiative and natural abilities.

The rows of cards should be interpreted both horizontally and vertically.

Horizontally - the top row shows the prevailing atmospheere, the middle section
conveys the basis of the issue, and the bottom row indicates future
possibilities.

Vertically - the first column expresses three aspects of the questioner's
character, the centre column denotes important factors which must be considered
before any decisions are made, and the final column indicates the opportunities
which are possible if the correct decision is made.

The most important card is the one covering the significator. This relates to
every other card and indicates the questioner's potential in relation to the
message conveyed by the spread as a whole. Do not forget to take account of the
significator when interpreting the card's meaning..

THE ROMANY SPREAD

This simple and popular spread relies on the interpreter's ability to blend the
meanings of cards within the same row to convert a single message, It is best
used when the questioner has a specific question. After shuffling and cutting,
the questioner deals 21 cards in three rows of seven running from left to right.
Read the rows separately, but with a single theme at the back of your mind.

The top row - refers to past influences and recent events that have contributed
to the present situation.

The middle row - reflects current circumstances, hopes and fears regarding the
issue in question.

The bottom row - denotes the likely outcome

A Quick Guide to Reading Ordinary Playing Cards

Divining from regular playing cards is an old practice and I am sure many of us know at least one fortune-telling game done with this tool. Reading regular cards is called cartomancy or metasymbology. Playing cards have been called "The Devil's Picture Book" and have a few superstitions associated with them. Miners and fishermen viewed it as bad luck to have a deck with them while working or on a voyage. Thieves will rarely steal a deck as they have a belief that this will turn luck against them . Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades - King David; Clubs - Alexander the Great; Hearts -Charlemagne; and Diamonds - Julius Caesar.
Other omens and superstitions about playing cards involve their use in gambling. It is generally believed that you will never get a good hand if you are dealt the four of clubs. "The Dead Man's Hand", Aces over eights, that Wild Bill Hickock was holding when he was killed, is considered very unlucky. The nine of diamonds is sometimes referred to as "The Curse of Scotland" as it was used to give instructions for the beginning of the Glencoe Massacre in 1692. On a cheerier note, we have to remember the old saying "unlucky at cards, lucky in love."
Gong Hee Fot Choy, "Greeting of Riches," is a divination system utilizing regular playing cards which Margarete Ward, a mystic and world traveler, introduced in her 1935 book. It draws heavily on Chinese and Eastern mysticism for its wisdom. This system uses a board, a book and 32 cards. Jokers, 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's were discarded and only 7's through to the Ace were utilized. The board and book are divided into 32 houses. Each card has a different meaning depending upon which house it lands, and are detailed in the book. There are 1,024 combinations. The Houses are Compasses, Marriage, Happiness, Enjoyment, Messages, Relatives, Health, Money, Seasons, Friends, Gifts, Moons, Sun, Luck, Wishes, Success, Surprises, Popularity, Abode, Journey, Papers, Vocation, Letters, Trouble, Disappointments, Death, Undertaking, Achievement, Inheritance, Callers, Gratitude and Inquiries. The hearts represent love and friendship; anything of a personal nature. The
diamonds represent fortune and riches; papers of any kind. The clubs represent luck wisdom and business. The spades represent the unpleasant things of life.
Tarot reading layouts readily adapt over to regular card reading as do divinatory meanings. Hearts equate to Cups, Diamonds to Coins, Spades to Swords and Clubs to Wands. To proceed with a reading, shuffle and cut in your usual method, and deal out the layout of your choice or try the following reading.

Relationship Potential ReadingA fun reading to ascertain the future of potential suitors involves separating the Kings or the Queens from the deck. You then proceed to lay these Trump cards out side by side in this order: Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds and Spades. Assign a name of someone you are involved with or interested in to each card, you can choose Unknown for one of them. Shuffle the cards and ask a question. ie: Who do I have the best chance of having a successful relationship? ; Who will I marry?; Who will I date next?; Who will call me first?.
Deal out the remaining cards face up, laying them out one at a time on or below one of the Trumps, proceeding across all four and returning to the beginning if required. Your question is answered when you deal a matching suit on one of the Kings or Queens. Ask another question and start laying down cards from the beginning of the row again, stopping again when a suit matches a trump. After all of the cards have been dealt, pick up each stack and count the number of cards of each suit. Hearts denote love, clubs indicate level of happiness, diamonds predict money and spades augur sex. Divination Donuts

1 egg beaten (fertility)
1/2cup brown sugar (love)
3/4 cup molasses (love)
12cup sour cream (protection)
3 cups all purpose flour (fertility andmoney)
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt (protection)
2 teaspoons allspice (protection)
1 large container of vegetable oil
A heavy pot
1 roll of paper towels
18 fortunes written on small slips of paper
(keep the fortunes positive and fun!)


In a large bowl, blend egg, brown sugar, molasses,
and sour cream. Sift in the dry ingredients and
mix well. Chill for 2 to 3 hours. Pour oil into
heavy pot. Heat to approximately 365 degrees. On
a lightly floured board, roll out the dough, a
small amount at a time, until the dough is 1/2
inch thick. Cut out the doughnuts with a 3-inch
floured doughnut cutter. (If you don't have a
doughnut cutter, use a clean tin can.)

Fry the doughnuts for 2 to 3 minutes or until
golden brown, turning once during the cooking
process. Drain the doughnuts on paper towels.
Cut a small slit in each doughnut and insert the
fortune.

Sprinkle doughnuts with powdered sugar or other topping.
Makes approximately 18 doughnuts
