Crocheted Toddler hat

Supplies:
5mm hook
About 1/3 skein worsted weight yarn (I used 'I Love This Cotton' and a twisted cotton from Walmart)

Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Sc dec – single crochet decrease

Special instructions:
Sc dec – Pull up a loop in each stitch indicated, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

Instructions: (ch-3 does not count as dc)
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3, dc 10, pull ring tight, join to top ch of ch 3
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc each dc around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (40)
Round 5: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (50 dc)
Round 6-11: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join to top ch of ch 3. Do not finish off.
(I did Round 9 in the coordinating twisted color)

First Earflap:
Ch 1
Row 1: Sc 12, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 8 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 6 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 4 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 2 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over two sc. Finish off.


Second Earflap:
Join yarn to approx. the 10th stitch from the opposite side of the joining chs. Ch 1.
Rows 1: Going away from the joining chs, sc 12, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 8 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 6 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 4 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 2 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc, sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over two sc. Do not finish off.
Finishing:
Loosely crab stitch around the sides of the earflaps and the edge of the hat (in the point of each earflap, crab stitch two times). (If this is too tight for you, try sc around instead) Finish off, weave in ends.

Braided Strings:
Cut 12 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long.
Take six pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of four strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is desired length, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.
Loopy Flower:
Round 1: Magic Ring, 8 sc. Pull tight to close. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 8. Sl st in same st. *Ch 8. Sl st in next st. Repeat from * around, with the final sl st in the base of the first ch loop. Finish off, weave in ends or leave ends for tying onto hat.
